Wild Man Fischer - "An Evening with Wild Man Fischer" (1969)

What can I say. Wild Man Fischer was an outsider musician long before the expression was coined. Opinions are still divided over whether this "naïve" approach made him worthy of the critical reappraisal recently afforded the blind street composer Moondog or the compulsive cassette-maker R Stevie Moore, or if he was simply a tormented figure more akin to Roky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators, or the singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston, two performers whose psychological problems have taken their music into unexpected directions.

Well, Frank Zappa liked and produced him. He played with Smegma. Thomas Pynchon mentioned him in "Inherent Vice". He was working for the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. 85 times.

Fischer was institutionalised while a teenager after attacking members of his family. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and manic depression. After his release he lived on the streets, making up songs that he would sing for passers by for 10 cents. It was during this period that Zappa discovered him and invited him for some recordings.

a great, if controversial, album; funny, touching, disturbing. wasn't zappa accused at the time of exploiting fischer? the man was clearly unwell. the recent-ish documentary of fischer's life is supposed to be great too.
mothers fans will love 'the circle'- a brilliant piece of guitar-driven acid rock.
thanks for posting.
