Weasel Walter describes it like this:"I had never heard one single second of this recording until the moment I put it on and started playing with it. Of course, all my playing is completely spontaneous: a truly "improvised" reaction to the playing of Bailey. I knew how long each piece was, but that was it. The real challenge here was to create decent overall "improvised" pieces minus any interaction from the recorded partner - not to mention that these were intended as solo improvisations and now they've been forcefully re-rendered as duos !"
Get it here:Derek Bailey (feat. Weasel Walter) - Solo Guitar Volume 1 (192 Kbps)
And this one is very special:
"As composer, organist, teacher and theorist, Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was one of the most influential European musicians of the second half of the twentieth century - his musical style ignored just about everything that had happened in European music between the troubadours and Wagner. He cobbled together a personal idiom out of bits and pieces of musical techniques and sources from around the world, forging them into a system he hawked with the ardent self-confidence of a traveling Bible salesman."And Mr. Walter overdubbed his piano-work, too.
This one is big - so I had to split it into 3 different pieces:
Olivier Messiaen (feat. Weasel Walter) - Catalogue d'Oiseaux #1
Olivier Messiaen (feat. Weasel Walter) - Catalogue d'Oiseaux #2
Olivier Messiaen (feat. Weasel Walter) - Catalogue d'Oiseaux #3
(all 192 Kbps)
Ps: More Weasel stuff below !

a HUGE thx for this! what an inspired combination - weasel walter and olivier messiaen - the others are great, but this promises to be something else. where next? dali's car, weld, shut up & play yr guitar, doom reworkings of arvo part? if only the rest of musicianland had this sort of imagination, but most seem content to plough the same old furrow, even so-called avant musos. thx again, chris_c
Love the Duet with Bailey. Great choice!
great posts! very nice to have walter's commentary... the messiaen reworkings are delightful. please post as many as you are able to find.
fyi, tom smith from tlasila (with whom weasel walter has occasionally worked) begain his musical career in the late 1970s overdubbing musique concrete-styled parts over punk and post-punk recordings by television, richard hell, giorgio moroder, pil, and many others. would that someone could unearth those recordings!
haha thanks, all these are much appreciated
Hey, thanks for your comments !
Inspired, yes - that is the word for it...
And yes, there are more obscure overdubs in the row... Think of Hungary and string quartets - and of Belgium and free-jazz organs...
Tom Smith - I know his work with "To Live and Shave in LA" and "Sightings" - but now I want these overdubs very very badly ! If anybody has a hint...
