Evan Parker & John Wiese - C-Section (2008)

Hm, this is a remarkable combination, yes ?

Evan Parker is very well known for his development of the European free-jazz and improv scene by assimilating the American avantgarde — John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler and others — and forged his own, instantly identifiable style. His music of the 1960s and 1970s is harsh, raw and unsettling, involving fluttering, swirling lines that have shape rather than tangible melodic content.

John Wiese is an artist and composer from Los Angeles, California. His ongoing projects include LHD and Sissy Spacek, but is known for his collaborations with many artists as diverse as Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Merzbow, Smegma, Kevin Drumm, Cattle Decapitation, and C. Spencer Yeh as well as his work as a solo artist.

And simple as that: they played together ! Real-time improvisations, two longer pieces and two very short. Remarkably airy and open, at the same time with a kind of ominous undertow, with a lot of Parker's characteristic 'fluttering' and Wiese adding great depth and spaciousness with controlled bursts, clicks and noises. Some real good interaction going on here.

I saw Evan Parker in Derby a few years ago and he was wonderful; I have some stuff by John Wiese I dip into now an again. This should be very interesting. Thanks very much!

Thank you for posting this. I was just listening to Evan Parker + Paul Lyons' collaborative record from 2-3 decades ago and wondering at how fucking amazing it sounds...this sounds even better.
