James Tenney - "Selected Works 1961-1969"












James Tenney is a monumental figure in late 20th century American music. This is the first recorded collection of Tenney's early computer music of the 1960s, some of the very first music composed by and for the computer.

"For Ann (rising)" is special. The piece is based upon the Shepard scale concept. Each rising sine-wave-like glissando, fades in and out, rising from the infrasonic to ultrasonic range, from below to above the ability to perceive pitch. This sounds very academic, but it produces a feeling of "no-hold" - you perceive a constant rising in your head - without any chance to rest.
