Motorpsycho & Jaga Jazzist Horns (2002)

Well, the idea of dutch indie Konkurrent's "In The Fishtank"-series is simple: 2 bands, 2 days and a studio. In the Summer of 2002, crammed in between boring press-days and exciting festivals in Holland and Belgium, Motorpsycho arrived in the studio to record. Along came the horn section of fellow Norwegians Jaga Jazzist, with whom they had done some experimental shows on jazz festivals. A soundcheck was hardly necessary, within 2 days the musicians managed to magnetize five groovy tracks. What came out is a stunning cocktail of Stax Soul, John Coltrane and obviously, Pharoah Sanders. The basic idea seems to have been to combine the angular, dense percussion and electronics of Motorpsycho with the free-form horns of Jaga Jazzist, resulting in a kind of big-band, post-rock fusion. The last song "Tristano" is recommended. And btw: both bands are worth checking out live !
