An inventive and self-taught player on acoustic six-string, 12-string, and lap steel guitar, Jack Rose falls into the so-called Takoma revivalist movement that echoes the often Eastern-tinged acoustic guitar experiments of John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and others, although Rose got his start as a musician in an entirely different direction, first as a rock and punk-inspired electric guitarist in the Richmond, VA, drone trio Pelt. Anyone who's managed to catch virtuoso guitarist Jack Rose live will tell you it's something of an experience to behold. With a magical urgency to his fretwork Rose captures the essence and spirit of the Takoma years, channeling the ghost of John Fahey in his picking. It's a glorious sound and one which over time Rose has made entirely his own, taking the guidance of his masters and crafting it into something that little bit more distinctive.
Jack Rose passed away on the morning of December 5th, 2009 from an apparent heart attack.
On this deluxe LP for the Three Lobed label we see Rose in live mode, taking on classics from his back catalogue and re-working them into epics - the high point being a particularly affecting version of the beautiful 'Calais to Dover'.
