"Six" features the kind of psych drone that is smart, self-aware, and aims effortlessly for the sublime. The trio of Wildidlife, lead by guitarist/vocalist Matthew Rogers, mixes Krautrock and other fuzzy nuggets into a stew of mythic, majestic ya-ya that ought to blow you away. What helps Wildidlife rise above other bands with similar agendas is their humor and sense of the moment. Songs like “Things Will Grow,” “Feed,” Kross” and “Whooping Church” peak at the right moments, and hang back when going forward would be a cliché. Credit the rhythm section of Andy Crane and Willy Nilz for that, as they slink in and out of silence and create space with stunning ease. "Six" is like falling down into a swirling, never-ending funnel: disorienting, kind of scary, but fun.
If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Animal Collective discovered doom metal, look no further than the 2nd song “Tungsten Steel: Epilouge".
