"I want the sweetness and the brutality, and I want to go to the very end of each of those feelings... I have been trying to find a way for the terror and the beauty to live together in one song. I know that it is possible." - S. SharrockI knew Mr. Sharrock as a collaborator with Pharoah Sanders, Miles Davis, Peter Brötzmann/Last Exit and even Bill Laswells "Material". I knew that his asthma prevented him of becoming a saxophone-player. So he tried to translate John Coltranes playing onto the electric guitar. And he succeded ! If you want to listen to a FREE guitar player - go for Mr. Sharrock ! I really mean this, folks !
Someone wrote: "Sonny Sharrock knows what it's like to hold lightning in his bare hands. During the late 60's, in an attempt to emulate the atonal squeals and spluttering trills of saxophonists like Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler, Mr. Sharrock turned up his amplifier and invented free jazz guitar. It was a music of raw power and high voltage." - And he turned it up to 11, you know.
But then this album struck me down... The first song "Apollo" combines so many different influences, colors and emotions... And everytime Mrs. Sharrock is starting her vocals again its nearly an orgasmic relief, believe me...You know, I love his "Last Exit" albums. I love the "more free" albums - maybe the "terror" he is mentioning in his quote above. And usually I am not so much into fusion-stuff. But if you want a real soulful experience with a lot of unbelievable free-guitar-excursions - take this: Paradise (192 Kbps)
The Invisible Record Archive inspired me to do this. You can track down two other outstanding Sharrock albums there.
- But this is mine...

thank you so much for this.
I love "Black Woman"
this is like the wife, or the mistress, depending.
thank you again.
Thank you!
Looks good but Sendspace is impossible - between 15 and 30 mins to download!
Sonny Sharrock is the holy grail to guitar extremes - and in extremes I'm also referring to the quote you mentioned - Sharrock was able to play absolutely terrific free stuff, but on the other hand he was also a highly original blues and funk guitarist. But as he did it often all on one record, he was sitting between every chair possible - but I love him also because of this, he stayed unique untill his very end, and because of posts like your excellent one - he lives on...
thanks a lot!
