Think for yourself - Do your own thing - And make it exciting ! These guys made it happen. I just watched the wonderful and highly recommended documentary about the "Minutemen" called "We Jam Econo" again - and it blew my mind - again...

More than any other hardcore band, the Minutemen epitomized the free-thinking independent ideals that formed the core of punk/alternative music. Wildy eclectic and politically revolutionary, the Minutemen never stayed in one place too long; they moved from punk to free jazz to funk to folk at a blinding speed.

They were influenced heavily by bands such as Wire, Gang Of Four, The Pop Group, and The Urinals, and nearly all of their early songs had unusual structures and were less than a minute long. The Minutemen were fans of Captain Beefheart as well, and echoes of his distinctive, disjointed, avant-blues music can be heard in their songs.
