Chris Corsano - The Young Cricketer (2006)

Well, Chris Corsano is now quite rightly regarded as one of the very finest drummers of his generation. He is capable of solo sets of the most beguiling inventiveness, featuring drums, gamelan-like metallic objects, tiny strings, saxophone mouthpieces and whatever else he has at hand.

He often performs in an improvisation duo with saxophonist Paul Flaherty. He has also recorded material with artists such as Jandek, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Six Organs of Admittance, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Nels Cline, Vibracathedral Orchestra, Cold Bleak Heat, Jim O'Rourke and C. Spencer Yeh.

"The Young Cricketer" plays out like a showreel for Corsano's miraculous dexterity and virtuosity as a drummer. It's a beautifully recorded album, with Corsano's expanded kit occupying a vast stereo field, and every percussive gesture allotted its own distinct place in the mix. Yet, there is so much more to listen to than just beats ! Consequently, this is probably the most thorough representation of Corsano's near peerless drumming yet committed to record and stands as a pretty indispensable document for all lovers of free music and percussive invention. - Absolutely stunning !
