"Mein Atem beim Schreien dampft." Rolf Dieter Brinkmann was an important poet of German "Pop-Literatur", inspired by the American Beat Generation (like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg). He lived in Cologne since 1962 and in the mid-sixties he became one of the writers who demanded the abolition of the boundaries between 'high' prose and 'bold' writing. But Brinkmann's hope to influence the literal life in the Federal Republic - too damn conventional in his opinion - was not fulfilled in this way. Brinkmann was opposed to literature that neglects aesthetics in favour of politics. He was, nevertheless, also a political author as evidenced by social criticism found in most of his texts.

"Anschalten, ausschalten, Anschalten, ausschalten und Schnitte." In october 1973 he began to walk around in Cologne with a cassette-recorder around his neck and a microphone in his hand. And he commented on everything he saw. He did monologues, he whispered, made field-recordings of the street-atmosphere, read postcards, recorded parties he gave, interviewed unknown people in bars, did noise-improvisations with his voice, etc, etc, etc... In 2005 the BR released a 5 cd package with 360min, 40sec of his spoken word tour de force which is called "Wörter Sex Schnitt." Thank you BR ! Its such great stuff...

While listening keep the following in mind: Harald Bergmann realised a film in 2006 called "Brinkmanns Zorn" using these original tapes. The actors had to move their lips synchronized to these recordings ! How great is that ? I will tell you - after i watched it...
