I visited Hamburg/Germany in 2005 and after a great night at the Pudel-Club I had a slight hangover the next day and just enjoyed walking through the city with all of its nice canals, cafes and people...
But suddenly I heard unusual noises from a certain distance and I thought it could be some kind of public Techno-Party - because the vocals/sounds were so disturbing and great ! It could be some kind of vocoder-stuff, or whatever...
Coming nearer I realised - Oh, well - this is just handmade live-music ! And then I saw the people who were doing this: people in traditional clothes of Mongolia. And they did their traditional instruments and sang their beautiful tunes. A big crowd raved around them. After their gig I asked them for a recoding and I bought the Hosoo & Ensemble Transmongolia "Gesang des Himmels" ("Chant of Heaven").
This is pure "Overtone singing, also called harmonic singing. It occurs when the singer amplifies voluntarily one overtone in the sequence available given the fundamental tone he/she is singing." - says Wikipedia.
Don't know - these tunes are really touching me. It is not just the unusual sound of the voices. They have a great knowledge of harmonies and melodies as well. If anybody knows something similar - let me know ! Get this one here: Chant of Heaven (Out of print)
Funny trivia: On the inside of the cover-art-work one of them is wearing a Pantera-T-shirt... I would offer it to you - but damnit - unfortunately I don't own the cd at the moment.
