Well, John Watermann was a true underground sound and visual artists. In the late eighties his name surfaced out of nowhere when a double CD was released by the legendary Walter Ulbricht label in Germany. Starting out in Berlin as a filmmaker and photographer he found that he needed deeply digging soundtracks for his films. So he started composing music in the mid sixties and then moved to Australia in the early seventies. Although he was collecting a wide range of sound equipment, his first releases did not surface until the late 80s. In the meantime he even recorded a collaborative work with Merzbow. Much of his work incorporated field recordings, which were heavily treated by electronics, resulting in (partly) highly rhythmic music through the extensive use of cut ups. His approach to noise and drone and rhythm is very unique in my ears. Here are 2 recommended albums:
John Watermann - "The Denial Of Cricket" (1989)
John Watermann - "Neurotic Jesus Cash Boy" (1999)
And there is a bunch of more freely available stuff HERE !
Enjoy !
